Korean driver's licence for international students

Eligibility is rarely the problem. Timing is. Ten days of course fits comfortably into a vacation and very badly into week nine of a semester.

Can international students get a Korean driver's licence?

Generally yes, provided you are a registered resident holding a valid Alien Registration Card and are at least 18 for a Class 2 Regular licence. Being a student places no restriction on which licence you may hold. The practical difficulty is timing rather than eligibility: all training hours must be completed within three months of starting, so a semester break is a far better window than mid-term, and the whole course is taught in English.

Check your own status

Can international students get a Korean driver's licence?

Generally yes, if you are a registered resident with a valid Alien Registration Card. The detail that trips students up is timing, not eligibility.

What we can and cannot tell you

  • A valid ARC is the practical requirement — students on short programmes who never register as residents cannot apply
  • Your ARC must still be valid when you apply, and the licensing counter checks the date
  • The minimum age for a Class 2 Regular licence is 18
  • Nothing about being a student restricts which class of licence you may hold
  • If your ARC expires soon, sort the renewal before starting a course rather than halfway through

We are a driving academy, not an immigration adviser. Nothing here guarantees that any particular visa status qualifies you for a Korean licence — that is determined by the licensing authority on the day, against your own documents. Confirm your position before you spend money on anything.

Timing

When in the Korean academic year to take the course

Ten days of course time is easy to find in a vacation and genuinely hard to find in week nine of a semester.

Winter vacation — best

Roughly December to February. Long, quiet, and the academy is open every day including the Lunar New Year period.

Summer vacation — good

Roughly late June to August. Hot on the circuit, but the schedule is wide open.

Early semester — workable

The first few weeks, before assessment starts. Saturday theory plus weekend practical blocks.

Exam periods — avoid

Midterms and finals. Your booked hours expire after three months, so do not start something you will pause.

Before you leave Korea

A Korean licence is easier to obtain here than to replace from abroad. Several graduates have told us they wished they had done it earlier.

Three-month rule

All training hours must be completed within three months of your start date. Plan the whole block, not just the first Saturday.

Budget

What a Korean licence costs a student

We will be straightforward about this: it is a significant sum on a student budget, and there is no student discount.

Class 2 Regular — what almost every student takes

Skills testPer attempt
55,000KRW

875,000KRW
  • All prices include 10% VAT. Three-month interest-free card instalments are available and most students use them.
  • Each failed test attempt adds 55,000 KRW. Two extra attempts cost more than the extra practice hour that would have prevented them.
  • The written test fee is a separate government charge paid at the examination centre.
Saturday class

Saturday Korean theory class in English for students

Three hours, walk-in, no booking. It does not clash with lectures, which is why it is the easiest part of the course to schedule around a degree.

Every Saturday, 13:00–16:00

  • Three hours of mandatory road safety education, in English
  • Arrive by 12:00 with your Alien Registration Card to register
  • No booking needed — walk in

Everything else fits around work

Course and road practice run 09:00 to 20:00, and we are open 365 days a year. Book each session at least one hour in advance and complete your hours within three months.

Worth it?

Is a Korean licence worth it for a student in Korea?

Arguments for

  • It is valid long after graduation, including if you stay on a work visa
  • Renting a car for trips out of the city, including Jeju
  • Internships and fieldwork outside the subway network
  • Korea is a cheaper and faster place to get licensed than several countries students come from

Arguments against, honestly

  • If you live centrally and leave within a year, the subway may genuinely be enough
  • Running a car in Seoul is expensive — parking, insurance, fuel
Student experience

What students find hardest about the Korean licence

Not the driving

Students generally pass the practical tests well — reflexes are good and the learning curve is short. The written test catches more of them out, because it is a memorisation exercise in unfamiliar traffic law rather than a reasoning test.

The scheduling

The other common failure is starting in a vacation, going back to term, and losing the three-month window with the road test still outstanding. Plan the whole sequence before you pay.

FAQ

Korean licence for students — frequently asked questions

Can I get a Korean driving licence on a student visa?

Generally yes, if you are a registered resident with a valid Alien Registration Card and are at least 18 for a Class 2 Regular licence. Being a student does not restrict which class you may hold. Confirm your own residence status before spending money, since the licensing counter assesses your documents on the day.

When is the best time in the academic year to take the course?

Winter vacation is best — long, quiet, and we are open every day including the Lunar New Year period. Summer vacation works well too. Avoid starting near midterms or finals, because all training hours expire three months after your start date.

How much does a Korean driving licence cost for a student?

Class 2 Regular is 765,000 KRW for the programme and around 875,000 KRW all in, including the 55,000 KRW skills test and 55,000 KRW road test. There is no student discount, but three-month interest-free card instalments are available and most students use them.

What do students find hardest about the Korean licence?

Not the driving. Students generally pass the practical tests well. The written test catches more of them out because it is a memorisation exercise in unfamiliar traffic law, and the second common failure is losing the three-month window by starting in a vacation and pausing for term.

Is a Korean licence still useful after I graduate?

Yes. It remains valid long after your studies, including if you stay on a work visa, and it is generally cheaper and faster to obtain in Korea than in several of the countries students come from.
