Exchange (usually not available)

FAQ

Questions from Indians getting licensed in Seoul, Korea

Can Indians exchange an Indian licence without a test?

Usually not. India generally isn't on Korea's written-test-exemption list, so most Indian residents take the full Korean test. Confirm your own case on the official KoROAD page — and note the test can be taken in English.

India is in the Apostille Convention — doesn't that let me exchange?

An apostille (from India's MEA) authenticates a document, but on its own it doesn't grant test exemption — that depends on whether Korea recognizes Indian licences for exchange, which generally it doesn't. So plan for the full test, available in English, unless KoROAD confirms otherwise for your case.

Is the test hard to take in English?

The written test is available in English, and SDA's theory class and materials are in English, so language isn't the barrier. Practising the standard question patterns is the key to passing first time.

Can I keep using an IDP once I'm a resident?

An IDP is for visitors under 90 days. As a resident with an ARC you should get a Korean licence rather than rely on an IDP, so it's best to sort it out soon after you arrive.
