FAQ
Questions from Americans getting licensed in Seoul, Korea
Can I just exchange my U.S. licence without any test?
For most states, yes — the U.S. and Korea recognize each other's licences, so you take only the aptitude (vision) test, not the written or road test. You'll still need a full, valid licence, an apostille of it from your issuing state, your ARC, passport, and an immigration record. Oregon and Idaho are exceptions: those licence holders must take the written test.
Why do I need an apostille instead of an embassy letter?
The U.S. Embassy in Korea stopped notarizing driver's licences years ago. Instead, you request an apostille on your licence from the Secretary of State (or equivalent) in the state that issued it. It's best to arrange this before you need to file, since it's processed in the U.S., not in Korea.
I'm active-duty military — is the process different?
If you hold an ARC, the standard resident process applies and SDA can guide you through it. SOFA-status arrangements sometimes differ, so message us with your situation and we'll tell you the fastest route for your case. We've worked with service members and DoD families near Humphreys, Osan, and Yongsan for years.
Can I drive on my U.S. licence or IDP once I have an ARC?
An International Driving Permit is only valid for tourists staying under 90 days. Once you hold an ARC as a resident, you're expected to exchange your licence or get a Korean one; continuing to rely on an IDP as a resident may not be legal. Plan to convert soon after your ARC is issued.
Will exchanging give me a manual or automatic licence?
Your Korean licence mirrors your U.S. one. If your U.S. licence is automatic-only, the Korean licence carries the same restriction. A full, unrestricted U.S. licence converts to an unrestricted Korean licence. To move from automatic to manual later, you take a short skills test — no written test needed.
What if I haven't driven in years?
Even if you qualify to exchange, Korean road rules, signage, and traffic flow take adjustment. You can book English-language road-practice hours at SDA to build confidence before driving on your own. Message us and we'll set up a short refresher.
