Two routes

Two routes to a Korean licence for British Citizens in Seoul, Korea

Most British Citizens with a valid licence can exchange it; a few situations still need the full test — which SDA handles in English.

Swap your UK licence

If you hold a full UK driving licence, you exchange it for a Korean one after only an aptitude (vision) test.

  • No written or road test
  • Aptitude/vision check on the day
  • Apostille of your licence from the UK Legalisation Office (FCDO) — the UK is an Apostille Convention member, so no embassy legalization is needed
  • Bring the photocard licence; a DVLA check code can help confirm details
  • Processing typically 1–2 weeks

Verify first: the recognized-country list is set by National Police Agency notice and can change. Confirm United Kingdom on the official KoROAD exchange page before you file.

Take the full course & test

Required if you hold only a provisional licence, have no valid licence, want a Class 1, or would rather learn Korean roads first. SDA runs the whole path in English.

  • Provisional licences can't be exchanged
  • No valid or expired licence
  • You want a Class 1 licence (exchange defaults to Class 2)
  • You'd rather learn Korean roads properly first

Exchange

Full UK licence + FCDO apostille + ARC.

Provisional

Provisional licences don't qualify — full test.

Full route

No valid licence, or Class 1 wanted.

FAQ

Questions from British Citizens getting licensed in Seoul, Korea

How do I authenticate my UK licence for Korea?

You get an apostille on your licence from the UK Legalisation Office (part of the FCDO). Because the UK is an Apostille Convention member and so is Korea, that single apostille is accepted — there's no separate embassy legalization step.

Can I exchange a provisional licence?

No — only a full UK driving licence can be exchanged. With a provisional licence you take the full Korean test, which SDA delivers in English.

I have an automatic-only UK licence — what happens?

Your Korean licence mirrors it, so you'd receive an automatic-only Korean licence. To upgrade to manual later, you take a short skills test — no written test needed.

Can I keep driving on my UK licence or IDP once I have an ARC?

An IDP is for visitors staying under 90 days. Once you're a resident with an ARC, you're expected to exchange or get a Korean licence — plan to convert soon after your ARC is issued.
