I have SOFA status — is the process different from the ARC route?
It can be. SOFA-status personnel have their own arrangements through USFK, while family members or others holding an ARC use the standard Korean civilian process. Because the right path depends on your exact status, message us with your situation and we'll point you to the fastest route — and be upfront if you don't need a course at all.
Can my spouse get a Korean licence if they've never driven before?
Yes — this is one of the most common cases we help with. A first-time driver takes the full route (theory, written, skills, and road test), and SDA runs all of it in English, so no Korean is needed. Many dependents get their first-ever licence this way.
I'm at Osan / in Songtan — how do I actually get to you?
Songtan Station is on Line 1, the same line SDA sits on in Anyang. You ride straight north with no transfer — roughly an hour. From Camp Humphreys, use Pyeongtaek or Seojeong-ri Station on the same line. Check Kakao Map for the exact train, or drive up the Gyeongbu Expressway.
Do I have to come to SDA to exchange my licence?
Not necessarily. If your U.S. licence is exchange-eligible, the aptitude test happens at a driver's licence exam center, and you may not need a driving course at all. Where SDA helps is getting your documents right (especially the apostille), handling Oregon/Idaho written-test cases, and offering road practice if you've been out of the driver's seat. We'll tell you honestly what you do and don't need.
My licence is from Oregon or Idaho — does reciprocity still apply?
Those two states recognize Korean licences but are treated differently on the Korean side: their holders must take the written test even though other states don't. SDA can prep you for that written test in English so it's a quick hurdle rather than a surprise.
Can I drive on my IDP or U.S. licence once I'm stationed here?
An International Driving Permit works for short-term visitors (under 90 days). Once you're a resident — including many SOFA and ARC situations — you're expected to move to a Korean licence. Sort it out soon after you arrive so you're never driving on something that's lapsed.
