Two routes to a Korean licence for Australians in Seoul, Korea

Most Australians with a valid licence can exchange it; a few situations still need the full test — which SDA handles in English.

Swap your Australian licence

If you hold a full state or territory driver's licence, you exchange it for a Korean one after only an aptitude (vision) test.

  • No written or road test where your state is recognized
  • Aptitude/vision check on the day
  • Apostille of your licence from DFAT — Australia is an Apostille Convention member, so no embassy legalization is needed
  • Licences are issued by each state/territory — confirm yours on KoROAD
  • Processing typically 1–2 weeks

Verify first: the recognized-country list is set by National Police Agency notice and can change. Confirm Australia on the official KoROAD exchange page before you file.

Take the full course & test

Required if you hold only a provisional (P1/P2) licence, have no valid licence, want a Class 1, or would rather learn Korean roads first. SDA runs the whole path in English.

  • Provisional P-plate (P1/P2) licences generally can't be exchanged
  • No valid or expired licence
  • You want a Class 1 licence (exchange defaults to Class 2)
  • You'd rather learn Korean roads properly first

Exchange

Full state licence + DFAT apostille + ARC.

Verify state

Recognition can be state-by-state — confirm on KoROAD.

P-plate

Provisional P1/P2 don't qualify — full test.

FAQ

Questions from Australians getting licensed in Seoul, Korea

Does my state or territory qualify for exchange?

Australian licences are issued by each state and territory, and recognition can vary, so confirm your specific state on the official KoROAD page. A full (not provisional) licence is what qualifies.

How do I authenticate my Australian licence?

You get an apostille on your licence from DFAT (the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade). Australia and Korea are both Apostille Convention members, so that apostille is accepted without embassy legalization.

Can I exchange a P-plate (provisional) licence?

Generally no — provisional P1/P2 licences usually can't be exchanged. You'd take the full Korean test, which SDA runs in English. A full (open) licence is needed for a straight exchange.

Manual or automatic Korean licence?

It mirrors your Australian licence: automatic-only converts to automatic-only, a full licence converts unrestricted. Upgrading to manual later is a short skills test, with no written test.
